Clearance for the new algorithm this year is possible but not the base case, CEO Sean Saint told analysts, as the company plans a mid-fourth-quarter resubmission.

Beta Bionics CEO: 'We Ran Out Of Time' On 3D Intelligence, Pulling The FDA Filing

Beta Bionics, which makes the iLet Bionic Pancreas insulin pump, withdrew its FDA filing for the 3D Intelligence algorithm because the review clock ran out, CEO Sean Saint said on the company's third-quarter earnings call on Tuesday. He called the setback procedural and said a clearance this year is still technically possible, though it is not what management is planning around.

Why the filing was pulled

Saint told a Stifel analyst the company reached the end of the 90-day review period just as questions surfaced near the finish. The agency could either reject the file or let the company pull it, he said, and pulling it is what everybody does. "It was just literally we ran out of time to answer all the questions," he said.

The open questions concerned how Beta Bionics validated its simulator, not the algorithm. Saint described the FDA's stance this way: "We like the outcome, but we don't believe it yet." The resubmission, planned for mid-fourth quarter, uses "the exact same algorithm with no changes" but adds validation work.

Asked by a Wolfe Research analyst whether approval by year-end could happen, Saint said "that would be quick." If the agency treats the new file as a continuation, he said, a clearance this year is possible, but the agency is not obligated to do that and "the statutory numbers absolutely put us into next year." He called next year the most likely scenario.

Launch timing and the Mint patch pump

Management expects to launch 3D Intelligence as iLet 3D and Mint 3D around mid-2027, subject to clearance, with a fourth-quarter 2026 launch still possible. Mint, the company's patch pump, won FDA clearance in September and is expected to fully launch in the U.S. in the first quarter of 2027. Saint said Mint can ship without waiting for 3D.

Third-quarter net sales hit a record $35.5 million, up about 30% from a year earlier, with gross margin of 57.3%. Beta Bionics raised the low end of its 2026 revenue guidance to $124 million to $126 million, from $121 million to $126 million. It ended September with about $374 million in cash and investments after a September stock offering that raised roughly $161 million in net proceeds.

The iLet uses adaptive algorithms and sensor data to deliver all of a user's insulin doses, and the company sells it in the U.S. through its own sales teams.

What comes next

Beta Bionics expects to start a pivotal trial of its fully closed-loop algorithm, which drops meal announcements, in the coming weeks. It also completed enrollment in its type 2 diabetes study, with an expanded indication targeted around mid-2027, subject to FDA clearance.

The next marker is the 3D Intelligence resubmission, which management plans for mid-fourth quarter of 2026.
