Vistra Stock Soars 10.46%, Adding $4 Billion After Raising Its Operating Earnings Outlook

Vistra, which sells electricity and natural gas and operates power plants, saw its shares soar 10.46% to $124.70 in Friday trading, as of 11:43 AM ET, adding $4 billion in market value after it raised its adjusted operating earnings outlook. The company reported higher energy and capacity prices in its Friday earnings disclosure.

Higher Earnings, More Buybacks

Third-quarter adjusted earnings excluding Asset Closure reached $2,378 million, compared with $1,581 million a year earlier. Vistra also expanded its buyback authorization by $1.5 billion.

Management's argument on Friday's earnings call went beyond the quarter's power prices. Executives defended the pursuit of long-term customer contracts and said their growth projection assumes roughly $3 billion of share repurchases each year, rather than a recovery in power prices.

A Rally Against Recent Losses

Friday's advance followed a sharp retreat: Vistra entered the session down 30% for the year through Thursday's close, while the S&P 500 had gained 8%. The stock had fallen 22% over the previous month.

That decline included a KeyBanc downgrade on Wednesday, from Overweight to Sector Weight. Vistra was on pace for its biggest one-day gain since October 6 in Friday trading; its market value stood at $41.85 billion in Friday trading, as of 11:43 AM ET.

Retail Customers And Power Plants

Vistra's business connects power generation with retail energy sales. Its annual report for the year ended December 31, 2025, described approximately 5 million residential, commercial and industrial retail customers across 16 states and the District of Columbia, including approximately 2.6 million in Texas. Its retail brands include TXU Energy and Ambit Energy.

At December 31, 2025, the generation fleet totaled 43,641 megawatts. Natural gas accounted for 62%, coal for 20%, nuclear for 15%, and solar and battery storage for 3%.

The company organizes its operations into Retail, Texas, East, West and Asset Closure. Asset Closure handles the decommissioning and reclamation of retired generation facilities—the business excluded from the adjusted earnings comparison.

Management's growth projection rests on roughly $3 billion in annual buybacks, putting repurchases alongside customer contracts at the center of its earnings-call case.
