NeoGenomics CEO Zook Says Succession Was Planned, And He Was Handed A Budget He Couldn't Shape
Outgoing CEO Tony Zook says Warren Stone will own the coming budget, and the company plans an investor day in the first half of 2027.
Tony Zook, NeoGenomics's chief executive on his last earnings call in the role, said on the company's call Wednesday that the handoff to Warren Stone drew on lessons from his own transition: "I was basically handed a budget that I didn't have the same insights that I would have liked to have had." NeoGenomics, which runs cancer-focused testing laboratories in the United States and the United Kingdom, will move Stone from president and chief operating officer to CEO on January 4, 2027.
A pointed question on timing
An analyst at Piper Sandler pressed management on why the change was happening now, noting that NeoGenomics's past leadership transitions "haven't always been seamless" and that the business does not appear to be broken. The analyst also asked what was learned in the earlier handoff from Chris to Tony.
Zook, who becomes executive chair and joins Stone on the board's leadership side, said the timing reflects "a position of strength" and called the process good succession planning. "There were no guarantees given to anybody," he said.
He said that when he took the job he put Stone over lab operations as well as the commercial team, a role covering almost 75% of employees. Announcing the move earlier in the month, he added, let management brief senior leaders at an already scheduled meeting. Because Zook stays on as executive chair, no new chairperson will arrive to challenge strategy, he said. Stone, he said, can own the budget because of the timing.
Stone: strategy stays, ambition may grow
Stone said he considers himself "one of the architects of the strategy" and has been acutely involved in nearly all decisions over the last two years, especially on people and strategy. What may change, he said, is the ambition for the value the strategy can deliver.
To keep investors informed on long-term goals, he said, the company plans an investor day in the first half of 2027. He said it has been four years since the last such opportunity.
A quarter that eased the handoff
Total revenue rose 11% to $209 million, with clinical revenue up 13% and next-generation sequencing revenue up 29%. Adjusted EBITDA, the company's adjusted earnings measure, was $18.7 million, up 53% from a year earlier.
Chief Financial Officer Abhishek Jain said the company raised its 2026 revenue outlook to $807 million to $809 million, from $802 million to $806 million, and its adjusted EBITDA outlook to about $60 million, from $56 million to $58 million.
Stone is slated to lead the fourth-quarter call in February, where management said it will provide its 2027 outlook.
