Kiniksa CEO On Deals With Cash Piling Up: 'The Bar Is Exceedingly High'
The drugmaker ended the third quarter with $568.8 million in cash and says it leans on Arcalyst and its own pipeline.
Kiniksa Pharmaceuticals CEO Sanj K. Patel said on the company's third-quarter earnings call that "the bar is exceedingly high" for outside deals, even as the profitable drugmaker ended the quarter with $568.8 million in cash.
A high bar for business development
An analyst from Citi asked how Kiniksa might get more value from a balance sheet that keeps growing, and where business development ranks in its priorities. Patel said the company does look at such opportunities, but with a commercial product and a pipeline already in hand, "the bar is exceedingly high."
He called management "a very pragmatic bunch" that looks at where value could come from "all the time," and said the company has been "very judicious" on capital allocation. He pointed to KPL-387 and KPL-1161 as homegrown programs, and said Kiniksa would keep weighing other opportunities "both internally but also externally."
Kiniksa is a biopharmaceutical company focused on heart and blood vessel disease. Its only commercial product is Arcalyst, a weekly injection for recurrent pericarditis, a painful inflammation of the sac around the heart.
The cash behind the question
CFO Mark Ragosa said the $568.8 million cash balance came after about $43 million in net cash generation during the quarter. Arcalyst revenue grew 58% year over year to $286 million, he said, and operating income rose to $54.2 million and net income to $47.3 million.
Management raised full-year Arcalyst revenue guidance to $1.045 billion to $1.050 billion. It also guided to 2026 research and development expense of $160 million to $170 million, which includes significant fourth-quarter pre-commercial manufacturing costs for KPL-387.
Selling, general and administrative expense is guided to $270 million to $280 million, a range Ragosa said covers added fourth-quarter personnel and promotion to build disease awareness and sharpen targeting.
Pipeline timelines
Patel said the pivotal late-stage KPL-387 trial continues to enroll and dose patients, and the company now expects data in the second half of 2027. He said the team hopes to launch the drug in the 2028-2029 timeframe. KPL-1161 is on track to enter an early-stage trial by the end of this year.
Kiniksa's market value stood at $5.7 billion in Tuesday trading, as management again pointed to Arcalyst's growth and its own pipeline as the main uses for its cash.
