Enovix Targets $8.5 Million In Annual Savings As It Shifts Resources To Korea
The battery maker eliminated approximately 220 positions and is investing $19 million to double South Korean drone battery capacity.
Enovix, which designs and makes lithium-ion batteries, eliminated approximately 220 positions and expects $8.5 million in annual savings as it directs more staff and investment toward South Korea. The company said in an SEC filing Thursday that it completed the first phase of the restructuring, cutting costs in the U.S., India and Malaysia while expanding Korean drone battery production.
Cost Cuts Meet Korean Expansion
The reductions covered employees and contract labor within a workforce of 946. Executive Chairman T.J. Rodgers outlined the cost-reduction effort to shareholders in August; the completed phase shifts both staffing and capital toward South Korea.
Enovix is making a $19 million investment to double drone battery capacity at its South Korean plant. The company says the military-qualified facility is increasing production to supply U.S. and allied drone and defense programs seeking batteries from outside China.
Rodgers framed the cuts as a way to make room for hiring: "Our streamlining effort is intended to prevent the rapid hiring for the new opportunities from actually increasing costs." He expects South Korean revenue in 2027 to be a multiple of its 2026 level.
ENVX shares rose about 7% to $2.56 in Friday trading.
Orders And A $216 Million Opportunity
Drone and defense orders booked during the opening weeks of the fourth quarter exceed total revenue for the third quarter, Enovix said. The company believes demand for non-Chinese batteries from those programs will keep growing throughout the decade.
A previously announced October order from a multinational dual-use drone systems provider covers 100,000 battery units. Deliveries are scheduled for early 2027, and Enovix expects follow-on orders in the second half of 2027 and beyond.
The broader South Korean drone, defense and industrial opportunity stood at an estimated $216 million at the end of the third quarter. That preliminary, unaudited figure measures potential peak annual production value for identified opportunities—not orders, committed revenue or a revenue forecast. Actual sales depend on customer qualification, program awards, production timing and volumes.
Malaysia Keeps Its Device Focus
Malaysia's Fab2 is concentrating on a smart-eyewear production order for Enovix's AI-1 silicon-anode batteries from its lead customer. Development and sampling continue for smartphone, smart-eyewear, wearable and other edge-AI customers.
That device work remains part of a business serving both consumer electronics and industrial applications. Enovix works directly with phone and device makers on custom cells, while its South Korean operations sell cells and packs to defense, industrial, medical and wearable customers in South Korea, North America and Europe.
At next Thursday's earnings webcast, Enovix plans to discuss third-quarter results and provide fourth-quarter guidance and full-year 2027 revenue guidance.
