Enovix Stock Soars 9.17% In Friday Trading Despite Plans To Cut Approximately 220 Jobs
The battery maker expects $8.5 million in annual savings while investing in South Korea to expand defense production.
Enovix, which designs and makes lithium-ion batteries, soared 9.17% to $2.62 in Friday trading, as of 12:41 PM ET, adding $48 million in market value despite Thursday's announcement of job cuts. The company is directing investment toward South Korea while tightening spending elsewhere.
Korea Expands, Other Operations Shrink
Approximately 220 of Enovix's 946 employee and contract-worker positions are being cut for $8.5 million in expected annual savings. The cuts cover operations outside South Korea; Malaysian operations are concentrating on a production order for smart eyewear.
Executive Chairman T.J. Rodgers said the company expects 2027 revenue in Korea to be a multiple of its 2026 revenue, while limiting costs at other locations.
The shift puts more resources behind defense batteries. Doubling Korean plant capacity will cost Enovix $19 million, its October 12 preliminary results release said. Its batteries serve smartphones, smart eyewear, defense, industrial and emerging edge-AI devices, with manufacturing and research mainly in Malaysia, South Korea and India.
Defense Orders Drive The Expansion
Drone and defense customers supplied approximately 70% of preliminary third-quarter revenue. Enovix's drone, defense and industrial pipeline grew 18% to approximately $216 million; the drone portion rose 48% during the quarter to approximately $150 million. Those prospective opportunities are distinct from completed shipments.
Ryan Benton, Enovix's interim CEO, said, “We are focusing on moving our $216 million drone, defense and industrial pipeline forward into design wins, purchase orders and shipments.” Benton said orders in the first part of the fourth quarter had already exceeded total third-quarter revenue.
Enovix attributes defense demand to U.S. and allied programs seeking batteries without Chinese content. Its defense cells are made entirely in-house in Korea, where the plant has a 20-year defense-production history. Consumer development continues too: year-to-date shipments included approximately 17,000 production samples to one of its 24 current and prospective smart-eyewear customers.
A Rebound After A 67% Slide
Enovix entered Friday down 67% for the year through Thursday's close, versus an 8% rise for the S&P 500. Shares had fallen 10% over the previous month. In Friday trading, as of 12:41 PM ET, ENVX was on pace for its biggest one-day gain since October 27, with a total market value of $574.96 million.
That decline came despite preliminary, unaudited third-quarter revenue of $11.0 million, up 38% year-over-year and above management's $9 million to $10 million forecast. Enovix recorded its sixth consecutive quarter of year-over-year revenue growth, alongside a preliminary standard-accounting operating loss of approximately $39.3 million.
The company also realigned leadership around defense and consumer opportunities, promoting Steve Bakos from senior vice president of worldwide sales to the newly created role of chief revenue officer and general manager.
Enovix is scheduled to report full third-quarter results next Thursday, when management plans to discuss fourth-quarter and full-year revenue guidance.
