Energy Transfer Books $536 Million In Legal Accruals, Up From $324 Million At Year-End
The pipeline operator also reports $795 million in favorable verdicts and a federal corrective order covering its liquids lines.
Energy Transfer, which owns pipelines, storage and terminals moving natural gas, crude oil and refined fuels across the U.S., has set aside about $536 million for probable legal losses, up from $324 million at the end of 2025, according to its quarterly report. The same filing discloses a federal safety order that reaches its entire hazardous liquid pipeline system.
Reserve up, possible losses barely moved
The accrual compares with about $133 million in the prior quarter's filing. Beyond what is booked, the partnership puts additional reasonably possible losses at up to about $76 million, against $74 million a quarter earlier.
On the other side of the ledger, it cites favorable verdicts, including against Greenpeace International and CPS Energy, totaling about $795 million, up from $786 million last quarter. With no appeal filed in time, the full CPS Energy judgment of $393 million, interest and legal fees included, went on the books in October.
A safety order across the liquids network
On September 21, 2026, federal pipeline regulators at the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) issued a Corrective Action Order following a crude oil spill near Macomb County, Michigan. Its investigation and repair demands extend to every hazardous liquid line the partnership or its affiliates own or operate.
Energy Transfer requested a hearing, which PHMSA postponed while negotiations continue.
Old fights end, new ones open
The Supreme Court denied review on October 5 in the Cline class action; the $124 million judgment had already been paid, which ends the case. FERC closed its Rover Stoneman House enforcement proceeding on October 30.
On October 9, the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe filed a third complaint over the Dakota Access environmental review. The partnership says much of it duplicates earlier suits and that Dakota Access intends to intervene and defend vigorously.
Shares traded at $19.46 in Thursday trading, down 3.47% from the prior close of $20.16.
Vaquero deal and the backlog
Energy Transfer agreed on October 6 to buy Vaquero, a Delaware Basin gas gathering and processing owner, for about $2.63 billion: $1.95 billion in cash plus roughly 33.3 million new common units. The deal is expected to close in the fourth quarter of 2026.
Next up are the talks with PHMSA over corrective measures and the Vaquero closing the partnership expects in the fourth quarter.
