BlackRock Holds 5.1% Of TSMC, A 1.33 Billion-Share Stake It Calls Passive

BlackRock beneficially owns 1,327,917,083 shares of Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing, or 5.1% of the common stock, according to a Schedule 13G filed Tuesday with the SEC. The asset manager describes the position as passive, held in the ordinary course of business and not to influence control of the chipmaker.

A passive stake with most votes in hand

A Schedule 13G is the passive ownership disclosure investors file once they cross 5% of a company. BlackRock filed as a parent holding company, with September 30, 2026 as the event date.

The filing gives BlackRock sole voting power over 1,241,870,999 of the shares and no shared voting power. That covers the large majority of the reported position.

BlackRock certified that the shares were acquired and are held in the ordinary course of business, not to change or influence control of the issuer. The filing adds that various persons have the right to receive dividends or sale proceeds, and that no one person's interest exceeds 5% of the outstanding common shares.

The figure aggregates holdings across BlackRock units. An exhibit lists the subsidiaries, running from BlackRock Fund Advisors to BlackRock Institutional Trust Company, National Association.

The AI chip foundry behind the stake

TSMC manufactures chips for other companies as a dedicated foundry, building them from customers' designs. In 2025, according to its annual report, High Performance Computing made up 58% of net revenue and smartphones 29%. North America accounted for 75% of net revenue by customer headquarters.

The company has been a beneficiary of the AI chip boom. It reported record third-quarter revenue of NT$1.494 trillion, up 41.2% from a year earlier. A report says it is preparing to raise prices on its advanced CoWoS packaging services by as much as 20%.

A Zacks analysis says the stock trades about 12% below its recent peaks, at 19.5 times forward earnings. TSMC's market value was $2.20 trillion in Tuesday trading.

BlackRock's certification puts the stake on the passive side of the line, with no plan to seek influence over TSMC's control.
