Ball Stock Plunges 7%, Wiping Out $1.3 Billion, After Pension Charge Pushes It To A Loss
The can maker posted a $94 million quarterly loss on a pension charge, while adjusted earnings per share rose and its 2026 targets held.
Ball, which makes aluminum beverage cans, fell 7.14% to $63.21 at Tuesday's close, erasing $1.3 billion in market value, after a third-quarter net loss of $94 million against $321 million in profit a year earlier. The loss stemmed from a $475 million pension charge; adjusted earnings per share reached $1.10.
A pension hit, a steady outlook
The company kept its outlook for comparable earnings-per-share growth of 10-plus percent and free cash flow of about $900 million. Global aluminum packaging shipments rose 4.7% in the third quarter, the company reported.
In North and Central America, the segment's figure was $210 million, versus $215 million before. Analysts pressed management on a consumer-goods shift from volume to price, and the CEO said customers are asking for more capacity, not less.
The drop was on pace to be the stock's biggest one-day fall in at least 275 trading sessions, since Sept. 30, 2025.
A stock priced for good news
Ball shares were up about 29% year to date as of Monday's close, well ahead of the S&P 500's gain of about 10%. The stock had climbed 21% over the prior month to its highest close of the past year, so expectations were high. Its market value stood at $16.7 billion after Tuesday's decline.
Ball sells aluminum packaging, mainly beverage cans, plus aerosol containers, recloseable bottles and aluminum slugs for personal care and household products. Its customers are large multinational beverage, personal care and household products companies, mostly under multi-year supply contracts. Net sales in 2025 were $13.16 billion, and North and Central America beverage packaging made up 48% of them.
Management's reiterated targets of 10-plus percent comparable earnings-per-share growth and about $900 million in free cash flow are the numbers the company is holding to for 2026.
