Zenas BioPharma’s Quarterly Loss Reaches $108.9 Million As It Prepares For Potential Drug Launch
Higher trial costs and licensing milestones increased spending, while its funding outlook depends partly on FDA approval.
Zenas BioPharma, which develops medicines for autoimmune and inflammatory diseases, posted a third-quarter $108.9 million loss, versus $51.5 million a year earlier, in results released Thursday with an SEC filing. Clinical development and preparations for a potential obexelimab launch increased expenses, while a licensing milestone brought in $10.0 million of revenue.
Trials And Milestones Increase The Bill
Research spending reached $58.5 million, compared with $34.4 million in the third quarter of 2025. Zenas attributed the increase principally to trials and regulatory work for obexelimab and orelabrutinib, plus personnel costs, including stock-based pay.
Administrative expenses rose from $13.2 million to $27.4 million. Stock-option changes connected to employee transitions and departures, hiring for commercialization, and other expenses associated with growth contributed to the increase.
Licensed research generated another $27.5 million in expenses, against $5.0 million a year earlier. The latest quarter included a $25.0 million development milestone owed under the InnoCare Pharma agreement and a $2.5 million regulatory milestone under the Xencor agreement.
Bristol-Myers Squibb supplied the quarter’s $10.0 million revenue through a development milestone; the year-earlier quarter had no revenue. Net other expense was $5.5 million, compared with $1.1 million of income, mainly because interest costs on royalty obligations, loans and convertible notes increased, partly offset by interest earned.
Obexelimab Moves Toward Regulatory Decisions
Obexelimab is an antibody designed to suppress B-cell activity without depleting those immune cells. Zenas said its FDA approval application for IgG4-related disease is under review, with a target decision date of May 27, 2027. European regulators have also validated its application for assessment.
Zenas founder and CEO Lonnie Moulder said, “we remain focused on commercial readiness ahead of the potential launch.” In October, the company appointed Jerald Korn chief legal and strategy officer, overseeing functions including business development and international initiatives.
The company reported additional obexelimab findings at the IgG4ward! 6th International Symposium on IgG4-RD, covering extension-study results, reduced steroid-associated toxicity and vaccine responses during a treatment-free interval. Further extension data are scheduled for ACR Convergence 2026 next week.
The broader pipeline includes ongoing late-stage orelabrutinib trials in primary progressive and non-active secondary progressive multiple sclerosis. Zenas expects fourth-quarter results from its mid-stage obexelimab lupus trial and initial data from ZB021, an oral drug already being tested in healthy volunteers with InnoCare Pharma. Initial human studies of ZB022 and ZB014 are expected in 2027.
Funding Outlook Depends Partly On Approval
Zenas held $647.1 million in cash, cash equivalents and investments on September 30, 2026. Management expects funding to cover operating costs and capital spending at least through the second quarter of 2029.
That outlook assumes receipt of a potential $75 million milestone from Royalty Pharma and a $75 million borrowing from Pharmakon tied to FDA marketing approval of obexelimab for IgG4-related disease.
ZBIO shares soared about 8% to $27.98 in Friday trading.
The FDA’s May 27, 2027 target decision date ties the potential obexelimab launch to the approval-dependent financing included in Zenas’ funding outlook.
