Tenable's Earnings Call Went Dead Mid-Q&A — Co-CEO Says He Has 'Literally No Clue' Why

Tenable's third-quarter earnings call lost its line right after the first analyst finished a question, and co-CEO Mark Thurmond said on the call that management had no idea why. Once the speakers were reconnected, he answered anyway, saying Tenable One made up a record 59% of new business in the quarter.

Dead air after the first question

An analyst from Needham had asked how many of Tenable's more than 5,000 Tenable One customers came from existing accounts versus new ones. The operator then told listeners management's line was open, and that the speakers were being reconnected.

When the call resumed, Thurmond said: "We have absolutely no idea. We got disconnected." He added, "We have literally no clue what happened. The line just dropped," and then turned to the question.

Tenable, which makes cybersecurity software that helps organizations find and fix weaknesses across their systems, sells Tenable One as its platform combining vulnerability management, cloud security and identity protection.

What Thurmond said about Tenable One

Thurmond said the quarter brought a record number of new logos landing on Tenable One. He cited 1,413 new logos, a significant portion of them on Tenable One. That figure sits oddly beside the 413 new enterprise customers CFO Matt Brown cited in his prepared remarks, and the call transcript was machine-generated.

Hundreds of standalone vulnerability management customers moved to the platform, he said, along with legacy Tenable One customers moving to the new package. "Tenable One absolutely crushed it in Q3," he said.

On the call, Brown said the 59% share was up from 50% in the prior quarter and 39% in the third quarter of last year.

Numbers behind the momentum

Brown said revenue was $276.4 million, up 9.5% from a year earlier, and that results topped the high end of guidance on every metric the company guided to. Net dollar expansion rate rose to 107% from 106%.

Adjusted operating income was $74.9 million, or 27.1% of revenue, and adjusted earnings per share were $0.63 against $0.42 a year earlier, including a $0.03 one-time tax benefit.

Tenable raised its full-year revenue outlook to $1.084 billion to $1.087 billion. For the fourth quarter it expects revenue of $277 million to $280 million and adjusted earnings per share of 56 cents to 58 cents.

Brown said he expects the net dollar expansion rate to hold at 107% in the fourth quarter.
