RenaissanceRe's Casualty Unit Posts A 110.6% Combined Ratio As Three Large Losses Hit
The Casualty and Specialty segment lost $134.5 million on underwriting in the third quarter while the company kept buying back stock.
RenaissanceRe's Casualty and Specialty segment ran an underwriting loss of $134.5 million in the third quarter of 2026, with a combined ratio of 110.6%, after three large loss events hit that unit hardest, the company said in its 10-Q on Wednesday. A combined ratio above 100% means underwriting lost money before investment income.
Three events, $191.4 million
The Middle East War, an explosion at a liquefied natural gas facility in Ras Laffan, Qatar, and an earthquake in Choco, Colombia, cut the company's underwriting result by $191.4 million in the quarter. Casualty and Specialty absorbed $133.3 million of that, and the Property segment $58.2 million.
The three events added 10.5 percentage points to the Casualty and Specialty combined ratio, which stood at 101.4% a year earlier. The segment's underwriting loss compares with a loss of $21.3 million in the third quarter of 2025. The Middle East War cost the segment $69.7 million and the Ras Laffan explosion $59.4 million.
The company's prior quarterly filing put that segment's second-quarter combined ratio at 103.3%.
A reinsurer with two engines
RenaissanceRe is a global reinsurance and insurance provider. Reinsurance is cover that insurers buy to protect themselves against large losses. Its Casualty and Specialty segment writes lines such as general casualty, professional liability and credit.
Company-wide, the quarter was profitable on underwriting: income of $426.1 million and a combined ratio of 79.7%. The Property segment's combined ratio was 32.4%. The net loss to common shareholders of $161.4 million came from $879.8 million of investment mark-to-market losses, $899.6 million of them on fixed maturity-related holdings as market yields rose, the company said.
Management wrote in the filing that it may see "catastrophe-like volatility from losses in our specialty business, as we did this quarter." It also said that "with several recent losses we believe rates need to adjust in some areas."
Buybacks continue into October
RenaissanceRe repurchased $310.1 million of common shares in the quarter and a further $143.8 million from October 1 through October 23, according to its earnings release. The stock carried a market value of $14.2 billion as of Wednesday.
The January 1 renewals, which the filing calls significant for Casualty and Specialty, are next. Management says it expects opportunities in loss-hit lines such as marine, energy, terror and aviation.
Management signals it wants higher specialty pricing at that point, where this quarter's losses came from.
