RenaissanceRe Posts $161.4 Million Quarterly Loss As $879.8 Million Of Investment Markdowns Swamp Underwriting Profit
The reinsurer's adjusted operating income stayed at $512.6 million, but book value per share fell 1.9% to $259.61.
RenaissanceRe, the Bermuda-based reinsurer, lost $161.4 million attributable to common shareholders in the third quarter, or $4.02 per diluted share, after bond markdowns outweighed a profitable underwriting book, the company said Tuesday in an 8-K. A year earlier it earned $907.7 million, or $19.40 per share.
Bond losses erase the core profit
Mark-to-market investment losses reached $879.8 million, including $899.6 million on fixed maturity-related holdings, which the company attributed primarily to higher market yields during the quarter. Total investment return was negative 4.4% annualized, against positive 9.0% a year earlier.
Stripping out investment gains and losses, operating income was $512.6 million, or $12.71 per share, versus $733.7 million, or $15.62, a year earlier. Annualized operating return on average common equity was 18.9%, down from 28.2%.
Book value per common share fell 1.9% in the quarter to $259.61.
Casualty and Specialty slips to a loss
The combined ratio, where anything under 100% means underwriting profit, was 79.7% against 68.4% a year earlier. Underwriting income was $426.1 million, down from $770.2 million.
The Property segment ran at 32.4%. Casualty and Specialty came in at 110.6%, including a 10.5 percentage point hit from 2026 large loss events, mainly the Middle East war and the Ras Laffan explosion, an LNG facility accident in Qatar in June. A Colombian earthquake in August added to the tally. Together the three events cost $191.4 million in underwriting results.
Gross premiums written fell to $2.10 billion from $2.32 billion, with Property rates cut across catastrophe and other classes.
Higher yields, bigger buybacks
RenaissanceRe sells property, casualty and specialty reinsurance, mostly through intermediaries, and also earns fees managing outside capital. Fee income was $81.7 million.
The portfolio's weighted average yield to maturity was 5.8% at September 30, up 1.0 percentage point from December 31, 2025. CEO Kevin J. O'Donnell said "significantly higher new money yields will compound net investment income over time."
The company repurchased $310.1 million of shares in the quarter, at an average $323.46, and a further $143.8 million from October 1 through October 23.
RenaissanceRe holds a conference call on Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. ET to discuss the results.
