Reinsurance Group Of America Plans Reporting Overhaul As Investors Question Its Earnings Mix

Reinsurance Group of America, which takes on insurance and investment risks from other insurers for premiums, plans to combine business lines within geographic segments starting in the fourth quarter, Chief Financial Officer Laura said on Friday’s earnings call. A Jefferies analyst challenged management to explain how much earnings come from underwriting, investment spreads and fees—and Laura said the company is evaluating clearer underwriting disclosures.

Geography Replaces Separate Business Lines

The revised presentation will have four segments: Americas; Europe, Middle East and Africa; Asia Pacific; and Corporate. Traditional insurance reinsurance and financial solutions will no longer appear as separate business categories.

Laura said the presentation would be “consistent with how we manage the business internally.” Management plans to release historical financial results reorganized on that basis before the fourth-quarter earnings call, giving investors comparable figures for the revised segments.

The Jefferies analyst proposed a rough earnings mix of 60% underwriting, 35% investment spreads and 5% fees, describing difficulty among investors in understanding how RGA earns money. Those percentages were the analyst’s estimates, rather than a company breakdown.

Laura’s response focused on making underwriting income more visible. She said biometric expertise—the assessment of insurance risks such as mortality and longevity—is a company differentiator, adding, “we will plan on sharing additional details at an appropriate time.”

Premium Categories Blur The Underwriting Picture

The distinction between traditional business and financial solutions increasingly cuts across the risks RGA actually takes. Its traditional operations cover life, health, disability, long-term care and critical illness policies. Financial solutions include investment-heavy insurance contracts, pension risk transfers, retirement-plan guarantees and contracts covering the risk that pensioners live longer than expected.

A growing share of financial-solutions deals also involves biometric underwriting, Laura said. That is why management is emphasizing total premiums excluding pension risk transfers rather than traditional premiums alone when discussing growth.

Laura put the limitation bluntly: “focusing on traditional premium growth is no longer a good indicator of biometric growth at the company.”

For the year to date, total premiums excluding pension risk transfers grew 8.9% as reported, or 8.2% with currency movements removed. The broader measure captures underwriting-related business that the old traditional category does not encompass.

Strong Investments Complicate The Earnings Read

RGA reported third-quarter adjusted operating income before tax of $736 million and after-tax adjusted earnings of $8.49 per share. Laura attributed the results to investment performance, contributions across regions and actions to improve existing insurance business.

Variable investment income produced annualized returns of approximately 15% for the quarter and approximately 12% year to date, against a planned 2026 return of 7%. Real estate joint-venture gains and alternative-equity returns drove the quarter’s outperformance, Laura said. Management does not expect the fourth quarter to repeat that level of returns, though it expects full-year returns within its longer-term 10%–12% range.

Actions affecting existing business contributed $57 million during the quarter across the U.S., Europe, Middle East and Africa, and Asia Pacific. Laura said similar actions over recent quarters increased the ongoing earnings run rate by approximately $10 million to $15 million, while their timing and size remain difficult to predict.

The reorganized historical results are planned before the fourth-quarter earnings call; greater detail on underwriting’s share of earnings remains an effort management is evaluating.
