Old Dominion Guides Fourth-Quarter Operating Ratio To About 73.5% Even As Revenue Runs Above Seasonal Norms
The CFO cited fringe benefits and fuel for a margin target at the low end of the seasonal range, with revenue guided to $1.54 billion to $1.58 billion.
Old Dominion Freight Line, the less-than-truckload carrier that moves freight sharing a truck with other customers' loads, expects fourth-quarter revenue of $1.54 billion to $1.58 billion, above normal seasonality, but an operating ratio of only about 73.5%, CFO Adam Satterfield said on the company's earnings call Wednesday. Shares were down about 7% at $174.20 in Wednesday trading.
Why margins lag the revenue
Satterfield said the 73.5% target, plus or minus 20 basis points (0.2 percentage points), excludes the annual actuarial analysis, which he treats as a reconciling item to any guidance. It sits at the low end of the usual 200 to 250 basis point sequential rise in the operating ratio, a lower figure meaning better margins. He added that results could come in "slightly better."
An analyst at Evercore ISI asked why the ratio would not follow revenue above seasonality. Satterfield replied, "we'd love for it to come in better than seasonality," pointing to fuel-driven inflation in petroleum-based items and revenue-linked costs in general and administrative lines.
He said the implied guidance means incremental margins of about 45%. Direct variable costs were about 51% of revenue in the third quarter, versus about 52.5% in the third quarter of 2022, when the company posted its best operating ratio ever, 69.1%. That is about 150 basis points better.
Fringe costs add a full point
Fringe benefits ran 42.8% of salaries and wages in the third quarter, against 39.7% a year earlier. Satterfield called that about a full operating point of headwind, driven mainly by health and dental costs, and said it could be a headwind in the fourth quarter too, already built into the guidance.
October revenue per day is up about 22% from October 2025, he said, with LTL tons per day up 1.6%. Revenue per hundredweight excluding fuel is up 5.5% to 6%. The general rate increase took effect October 1 this year, a month earlier than last year.
A 71.5% quarter and capital plans
The third-quarter operating ratio improved 280 basis points to 71.5%. Revenue rose 13.1% to $1.59 billion and earnings per diluted share rose 28.9% to $1.65. Satterfield said overhead leverage should continue as revenue grows, and said spare real estate capacity remains north of 35%.
He said annual strategic planning in a few weeks will set 2027 capital spending, which he expects to run below the typical 10% to 15% of revenue.
Satterfield said the company has returns on invested capital of 25% to 30% and expects to remain the biggest market share winner over the next 10 years.
