IDEX's Tariff-Refund Margin Lift Shrinks To 10 Basis Points In The Third Quarter
IDEX says costs were not fully recovered at historical margins, and the company drew $260.0 million on its revolver in nine months, partly for buybacks.
IDEX, which makes specialized pumps, valves, flow meters, seals, fire and rescue equipment and precision optical components, says in its 10-Q that cost increases "were not fully recovered at historical margin rates," leaving gross margin under pressure even with price gains. The one-time boost from refunded IEEPA tariffs, which padded the second quarter, has nearly vanished: worth 10 basis points of gross margin in the third quarter.
The refund boost fades
The tariffs were struck down by the U.S. Supreme Court on February 20, 2026, and IDEX says it collected substantially all anticipated refunds in the second quarter, with minimal impact continuing into the third. For the third quarter, a $0.7 million cut to cost of sales and a $1.6 million benefit to net sales lifted gross margin by 10 basis points (0.10 percentage points) and added $0.02 to diluted earnings per share.
For the nine months, refunds cut cost of sales by $22.7 million, while expected customer rebates reduced net sales by $13.1 million. Net effect: 60 basis points of gross margin and $0.10 of EPS. The prior quarter's filing had put the second-quarter benefit at 150 basis points of gross margin and $0.08 of EPS.
Gross margin was 45.1% in the quarter against 44.5% a year earlier, and 45.5% for nine months against 45.0%. Net sales rose 8% to $951.7 million; diluted EPS rose 15% to $1.95.
Where growth and margins come from
The Health & Science Technologies segment, the largest, carried the quarter. Organic sales there rose 13% on AI-driven demand for data center power and semiconductor markets, plus strength in space and defense. Adjusted EBITDA margin there reached 28.8% from 27.7%.
Fluid & Metering Technologies grew 4% organically, mainly on price. Its nine-month adjusted EBITDA margin was 33.8%, flat, as net productivity gains were offset by unfavorable mix. In Fire & Safety/Diversified Products, nine-month margin was hurt by unfavorable mix, though it rose to 29.0% from 28.7%.
Management raised its full-year outlook to adjusted EPS of $8.91 to $8.96, from $8.70 to $8.85, in the earnings release.
Buybacks and the revolver
IDEX repurchased $74.6 million of shares in the quarter. In the nine months it drew $260.0 million on its revolving credit facility, which it used for general corporate purposes including share repurchases, and repaid $325.9 million. Borrowings outstanding were $158.5 million at September 30, down from $228.8 million at year-end.
On September 3 the company refinanced the $800 million facility, pushing maturity to September 2031. Up to $100 million can be used for letters of credit. Its shares closed at $238.54 on Wednesday, for a market value of $17.2 billion.
Management's adjusted EPS guidance of $8.91 to $8.96 now has to hold without the refund tailwind.
