Dover Backlog Jumps 35% As Customers Line Up To Reserve Factory Capacity

Dover, the diversified industrial manufacturer, has a backlog 35% above a year ago, and CEO Richard J. Tobin said on the company's third-quarter earnings call Thursday that customers are "basically getting in line to reserve that capacity."

Orders arriving far ahead of schedule

Orders rose 16% from a year earlier in the quarter, with growth in all five segments, Tobin said. Book-to-bill, the ratio of orders to revenue, was 1.03 for the quarter and 1.08 over the trailing 12 months, and every segment has grown bookings faster than revenue over that span.

Roughly half the backlog is scheduled to ship in 2027. Asked by an analyst from Wells Fargo what drives it, Tobin said capacity constraints are pushing the backlog into 2027.

Asked what a normal conversion looks like, he said the share is higher than average. In a normal year, he said, book-to-bill would fall in the third quarter, but customers in some segments are ordering well ahead of usual to secure supply.

A UBS analyst argued that quarterly orders averaging $2.3 billion to $2.4 billion ran 9% to 10% above average quarterly revenue, and asked whether that points to 2027 organic growth. Tobin declined: doing high-level math without knowing the timing of those orders, he said, "is a fool's game."

Doubling heat exchanger output

Dover makes industrial equipment, parts, consumables and software across five segments, including fuel dispensers, product-marking systems, pumps and commercial refrigeration. Its Climate and Sustainability Technologies segment grew 18% organically, led by brazed plate heat exchangers and strength in liquid cooling for data centers. Lead times are extended, and Dover is investing to double its global capacity for large heat exchangers through 2027, Tobin said.

He conceded the competition. "Everybody wants to be in data centers," he said, adding that rivals are also announcing capacity expansions. Capacity decisions must be made 18 months ahead, he said, and he does not think Dover is "getting over our skis" given its backlog.

Overall organic growth accelerated to 7%, and adjusted earnings per share rose 10% to $2.88. Dover narrowed full-year guidance toward the upper end, to organic growth of 5% to 6% and adjusted EPS of $10.60 to $10.75. It repurchased over $330 million of stock in the quarter.

What the stock did and what comes next

Shares traded at $192.73, down 3.56%, in Thursday trading, according to market data, for a market value of $26.9 billion.

The food retail production ramp has cost about $40 million so far this year, Tobin said, and margins in the climate segment should improve meaningfully in 2027. Dover will quantify carryover restructuring benefits when it gives full-year guidance in January.

Dover will give its 2027 guidance in January, when Tobin said the company will put numbers on the restructuring savings carrying over.
