ConMed CEO Won't Discuss Strategic Action Rumor — But Says He Can See Why 'Somebody Would Be Attracted'

ConMed CEO Pat Beyer declined to address a rumor about strategic action for the company on its third-quarter earnings call Wednesday, then added, "I can see why somebody would be attracted to ConMed." ConMed, which makes surgical devices used in orthopedics and general surgery, grew organic constant currency sales 6.7% in the quarter.

A rumor, and a pointed answer

A JPMorgan analyst said ConMed had mentioned in some releases that it was evaluating strategic action and asked for the latest on interest. Beyer replied:

The case Beyer made

Beyer pointed to the exit from the gastroenterology business and a refocus on three markets: minimally invasive surgery, smoke evacuation and orthopedic soft tissue repair. He named three products driving them: AirSeal, Buffalo Filter and BioBrace.

He called that step one, deciding where to play and how to win. Step two, he said, is refining a multi-year plan covering M&A actions, how to win, and how to maximize growth while optimizing profitability.

Third-quarter net revenue was $335.6 million, down 0.7% as reported. Adjusted earnings were $1.04 per diluted share, above the high end of the company's expectations, against $1.08 a year earlier. The company now guides full-year adjusted earnings of $4.54 to $4.61 per share.

Appetite for M&A, details in February

Later, CFO John Gallagher told a Jefferies analyst the company has "an appetite for looking at revenue growth accretive M&A opportunities." He said he will lay out 2027 capital allocation specifics on the fourth-quarter call.

Gallagher said the leverage ratio stood at 2.7 times on September 30, coming down and freeing up capacity, though interest expense is high and the company is weighing its debt stack. ConMed has repurchased about $49.9 million of stock in the first nine months of 2026 and anticipates about $62 million for the full year.

Gallagher said the specifics on 2027 capital allocation, M&A priorities included, come on the fourth-quarter call.
