Boston Scientific Stock Plunges 8%, Wiping Out $5.4 Billion After Cyberattack Forces Outlook Cut

Boston Scientific shares plunged 8.23% to $41.35 in Wednesday trading, as of 10:13 a.m. ET, erasing $5.4 billion in market value, after the medical-device maker cut its 2026 outlook following an August cybersecurity incident. Management also guided to lower fourth-quarter sales and called 2027 the trough.

A lower profit outlook

Boston Scientific now projects 2026 earnings per share of $3.16 to $3.18, excluding certain items. The move came on the day the company reported results; third-quarter revenue was $5.14 billion.

Fourth-quarter sales are expected to come in lower, according to the SEC filing, and per-share profit slipped to $0.40 from $0.51.

On the earnings call, management said weakness in Watchman and electrophysiology will last through 2027, and it is aiming for 2028 for a stronger rebound.

A stock already down 53% this year

Boston Scientific makes medical devices used to treat and diagnose disease, sold mainly to hospitals, physicians and other health care providers worldwide. International sales were 36% of global net sales in 2025.

The shares were down about 53% year to date at Tuesday's close, while the S&P 500 was up about 13%. Before Wednesday's session the stock sat 57% below its highest close of the past year, set on November 13, 2025.

Wednesday's drop put the stock on pace for a fourth straight daily decline and its biggest one-day fall since May 27. Its market value was $59.9 billion at the time of the report.

Management's own timeline puts the trough in 2027 and a stronger rebound in 2028.
