UPS Takes $182 Million Goodwill Hit On Healthcare Logistics Unit, Citing Europe
The charge lands on a unit the prior quarterly report said had only a limited cushion, and a second unit is recovering slower than expected.
UPS took a $182 million goodwill impairment on its healthcare logistics unit, tied to weak European results. The company reports the unit inside Supply Chain Solutions, and disclosed the charge despite raising its full-year outlook in October.
A cushion that ran out
The unit's carrying value now exceeds its fair value. At the July 1, 2026 test it held about $1.6 billion of the company's $5.8 billion in goodwill.
The prior quarter's report had flagged only a limited cushion for both tested units. That report put the same unit's goodwill at $738 million at the July 2025 test.
The charge cut diluted earnings per share by $0.21. UPS excludes it from adjusted earnings of $1.69 a share, against reported earnings of $1.37. Operating profit in Supply Chain Solutions fell to $92 million from $525 million a year earlier, or $274 million on an adjusted basis, according to the earnings release.
Mail Innovations is next in line
The filing also flags Mail Innovations, which holds about $295 million of goodwill. It still shows fair value above carrying value, but UPS said cost pressure that followed the expiration of a contract with its primary vendor has eased more slowly than anticipated. It warned that further deterioration in performance could hurt the unit's fair value estimates.
UPS said none of its other reporting units showed signs of impairment in the nine months. It cautioned that actual performance, forecast changes or trade policy shifts could bring more non-cash charges in the future.
Raised outlook, bruised healthcare bet
UPS has pushed healthcare as a growth market, adding the Andlauer Healthcare Group in the fourth quarter of 2025. Healthcare logistics revenue rose $224 million in the quarter, which UPS tied mainly to that acquisition and added customer demand.
In October the company raised its full-year 2026 outlook to roughly $92.6 billion in revenue and about $7.28 in adjusted earnings per share. Third-quarter revenue rose 6.7% to $22.9 billion, while operating profit slipped to $1.7 billion. UPS had about $6.8 billion in cash at September 30, and market value stood at $92.9 billion as of Wednesday's report.
UPS's next annual goodwill test is set for July 1, 2027, when Mail Innovations and its other units face the same review.
