Roblox Revenue Rises 16% To $1,572 Million, But Paying Players Drop To 1.8 Million From 2.3 Million
Bookings fell to $1,697 million from $1,922 million as the FTC and two states weigh child-privacy claims against the platform.
Roblox's reported revenue rose 16% to $1,572 million in the third quarter, but the cash-sales measure underneath it fell: bookings dropped to $1,697 million from $1,922 million a year earlier, according to the company's 10-Q filed Thursday. The gap exists because revenue is still working through earlier sales, while the number of people paying has shrunk.
Fewer payers, thinner consumables
Roblox, which runs a free-to-play platform where users play and build 3D games and spend its Robux currency, said average daily paying users fell to about 1.8 million from about 2.3 million a year earlier. Of 138 million average daily active users, only that sliver paid. Daily bookings per paying user came to $9.98.
Consumable items, which book revenue when used, fell to 10% of virtual-item revenue from 22%. Older deferred sales lifted reported revenue.
The change in deferred revenue, the cash banked ahead of revenue recognition, shrank to $136 million from $573 million a year earlier. The company's earnings release, filed the same day, puts fourth-quarter bookings guidance at $1,890 million to $2,000 million.
Courts and regulators close in
The 10-Q adds new court rulings. Louisiana's case is narrowed to one consumer-practices claim, and Roblox has appealed. A Tennessee court denied Roblox's motion to dismiss on September 17. A Los Angeles County court overruled its demurrer and denied its anti-SLAPP motion on September 23.
The FTC, Pennsylvania and Utah told Roblox in October they may sue for monetary damages. Roblox says it cannot reasonably estimate losses from those matters.
It did accrue $49 million in the quarter and $140 million for nine months for settlements with states, and has settled with Alabama, Mississippi, Nevada, South Dakota, West Virginia and Kansas. Overseas, Roblox was named a Very Large Online Platform by the European Commission on August 31, with added duties starting January 1, 2027, and in August it agreed a binding undertaking with Australia's eSafety Commissioner.
Buybacks and cash
Roblox repurchased $200 million of stock in the quarter and $580 million for nine months, leaving $2.4 billion on a $3.0 billion authorization. Nine-month operating cash flow was $1,342 million, and net loss for the quarter was $230 million.
The fourth-quarter report will test whether bookings climb back toward the guided $1,890 million to $2,000 million range.
