PMV Pharmaceuticals Names Biotech Investor Matt Eckler To Board As It Readies Ovarian Cancer Drug Filing

PMV Pharmaceuticals added Dr. Matthew Eckler, 42, to its board effective October 1, according to an 8-K filed Monday. Eckler, a principal at Samsara BioCapital, will serve until the 2029 annual meeting of stockholders.

What the 8-K says

Under the company's outside director pay policy, Eckler gets $40,000 a year in cash for board service, with extra cash for any committee work. He received an initial option grant for 84,000 shares and is expected to receive an annual option for 42,000 shares on the date of each annual stockholder meeting.

The filing says no arrangements or understandings lie behind his appointment, and he has no family ties to any director or executive officer. Apart from a standard indemnification agreement, it says he has no material interest in any disclosable transaction.

In the press release attached to the filing, PMV says Eckler leads the public equity strategy at Samsara BioCapital. He held investment roles at ArrowMark Partners and GMT Capital and was a vice president and senior biotech analyst at RBC Capital Markets. He holds a Ph.D. in molecular biology from the University of California, Santa Cruz.

Board Chair Laurie Stelzer said Eckler "brings deep understanding of the biotechnology sector, including extensive healthcare investment experience." Eckler called rezatapopt "a differentiated approach to targeting mutant p53."

Why the timing matters

Eckler joins after PMV completed enrollment in the Phase 2 monotherapy portion of its pivotal PYNNACLE trial of rezatapopt, a p53 reactivator. The company is preparing a new drug application for accelerated approval in platinum-resistant or refractory ovarian cancer with a TP53 Y220C mutation.

The FDA has granted the drug Fast Track designation for solid tumors with a p53 Y220C mutation. It also holds Orphan Drug Designation for TP53 Y220C-positive ovarian, fallopian tube and primary peritoneal cancers.

PMV shares closed at $1.79 at Friday's close (market data).

What to watch

PMV plans to submit the application in the first quarter of 2027. Its forward-looking statements list the successful filing of the application among the risks.

The next dated milestone is the planned first-quarter 2027 submission of the rezatapopt application.
