Mosaic, which mines and sells phosphate and potash crop nutrients, saw its shares climb 10.42% to $20.34 in Wednesday trading as of 12:41 p.m. ET, adding about $610 million in market value. The rebound came the day after the company reported a quarterly loss driven by costly sulfur, and said it had locked in a cheaper sulfur price for the fourth quarter.

A loss, then a cheaper sulfur price

Mosaic lost $72 million in the third quarter, or $0.23 a share, against a $411 million profit a year earlier. Revenue was $3.1 billion.

Adjusted EBITDA, a measure of operating earnings, fell to $324 million from $806 million. The Phosphate segment posted a $194 million operating loss.

Refiners on the U.S. Gulf Coast agreed to a fourth-quarter sulfur price of $615 per long ton, down from the $715 third-quarter average. Even so, Mosaic projects that phosphate adjusted EBITDA will weaken again in the fourth quarter.

Starting from a depressed level

Mosaic's phosphate and potash mines span Florida, Louisiana, Saskatchewan and New Mexico, and it also sells crop nutrients in Brazil and Paraguay.

The shares were down about 23% year to date at Tuesday's close, while the S&P 500 was up about 11%. The stock had fallen 13% over the prior month and closed 41% below its highest close of the past year, set on March 12. The second-quarter 10-Q had already shown a net loss of $272.8 million on revenue of $2.8 billion.

Wednesday's gain put the stock on pace for its biggest one-day rise in at least 275 trading sessions, since Oct. 1, 2025.

Fourth-quarter targets

Mosaic expects fourth-quarter phosphate sales volumes of 1.3 million to 1.6 million tons, with DAP prices of $820 to $840 per ton. In its earnings release, the company put planned 2026 capital spending at $1.2 billion.

Mosaic's own fourth-quarter outlook still calls for weaker phosphate adjusted EBITDA, even with sulfur at $615 per long ton.
