Fortive's Operating Margin Jumps 580 Basis Points, But Tariff Refunds And A Vanished Charge Do Most Of The Work

Fortive's third-quarter operating margin hit 21.3%, helped by $18.0 million of tariff refunds and the absence of last year's separation charge.

Fortive's Operating Margin Jumps 580 Basis Points, But Tariff Refunds And A Vanished Charge Do Most Of The Work

Fortive's third-quarter operating margin rose to 21.3% from 15.5%, and a 10-Q filed Wednesday shows $18.0 million of tariff refunds in cost of sales helped drive it. The company, which makes instruments, software and services for workplace safety and healthcare, says the amount and timing of any future refunds remain uncertain.

Two items behind the 580 points

The 10-Q breaks the 580-basis-point gain (5.8 percentage points) into pieces. Operating improvements from volume, pricing and productivity, net of higher employee costs and inflation, added 35 basis points. Tariff refunds added 160 basis points. Separation-related stock compensation recorded a year earlier added 370 basis points, since it no longer weighs on the comparison.

That year-earlier charge was $33 million, booked when Fortive split off Ralliant, its former Precision Technologies business, on June 28, 2025. Amortization on existing businesses added 95 basis points, while a capitalized software impairment took off 55.

Operating profit was $235.9 million, against $159.6 million a year earlier, on sales of $1,107.5 million.

Refunds the adjusted numbers exclude

The refunds stem from a February 20, 2026 Supreme Court ruling against some of the president's emergency-powers tariffs. Fortive files claims through a processing system built by U.S. Customs and Border Protection, and credits cost of sales once claims are approved. Of the refunds, $18.0 million landed in the quarter and $22.5 million over nine months, substantially all received in cash.

The earnings release strips the $18.0 million out of adjusted results, worth $0.06 per share. Adjusted earnings per share were $0.77, up from $0.68, while standard-accounting diluted EPS was $0.57, against $0.35.

The prior quarterly filing cited 40 basis points from refunds for the second quarter without a dollar figure. The new one adds the dollars and a warning that recoverability, timing and amount of future refunds are uncertain and subject to CBP review.

Where the refunds landed

Intelligent Operating Solutions, the segment selling Fluke-type test instruments and facility software, took most of the benefit: tariff refunds added 225 basis points to its margin, which rose to 29.1% from 25.9%. In Advanced Healthcare Solutions, refunds added 20 basis points, yet margin fell to 11.2% from 12.9%.

Fewer shares helped per-share results too. Diluted shares averaged 303.9 million, against 333.4 million a year earlier. Fortive bought back 5.0 million shares in the quarter at an average $60.14.

The company raised its full-year adjusted EPS guidance to $3.10 to $3.14, a figure that, by Fortive's own definition, excludes the tariff refunds.
