Axos Posts 15.66% Return On Equity, With $129.6 Million In First-Quarter Net Income
The bank's investor deck shows net income up 15% from a year earlier and commercial real estate specialty loans leading growth.
Axos Financial, a digital bank with a securities clearing business, put first-quarter net income of $129.6 million, or $2.25 a diluted share, in an investor presentation filed with the SEC on Tuesday. The deck shows a 15.66% return on equity and a 1.72% return on assets for the fiscal first quarter of 2027.
Growth against a year earlier
Compared with the first quarter of fiscal 2026, the deck shows asset growth of 12%, deposit growth of 14%, net income growth of 15% and diluted earnings per share growth of 16%.
On a filing made Tuesday, Axos said it will use the presentation at investor meetings starting on or around November 4 and over the next few months.
Commercial real estate leads the loan book
Total loans reached $26,359 million at September 30, up $263 million from $26,096 million at the end of the prior quarter. Commercial real estate specialty loans rose $602 million to $7,873 million, the largest gain of any category.
Lender finance real estate loans added $188 million and asset-based and cash flow lending added $128 million. Capital call facilities fell $345 million and non-real-estate lender finance fell $174 million.
The deck says 61% of the commercial real estate specialty balance at September 30 sits in indirect note structures where Axos has first payment priority. Those loans carry a weighted-average loan-to-value of 45%.
A $25.4 billion deposit base
Total deposits stood at $25.4 billion, with consumer direct deposits the largest piece at $14.0 billion. Axos said approximately 85% of deposits are FDIC-insured or collateralized.
Axos describes itself as three divisions, consumer banking, commercial banking and securities, whose mix of lending, deposits and fees reduces risk across environments. Its securities roadmap moves from third-party-dependent technology in 2018 to 2022, to home-grown but duplicative systems in 2023 to 2026, toward a single entitlement-based platform from 2027.
The deck also repeats a one-time pre-tax gain of about $92.4 million from the FDIC loan purchase in the year ended June 30, 2024, which the company first reported in an August 8-K.
Axos's clearing business held about $48 billion in client assets under custody or administration, according to the deck.
