[Summit Therapeutics](https://www.bullished.co/tag/smmt/), a biopharmaceutical company developing cancer medicines, dropped the going-concern language from its [10-Q filed Wednesday](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/0001599298/000159929826000090/smmt-20260930.htm?ref=bullished.co) after AstraZeneca's [$2.0 billion](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/0001599298/000159929826000090/smmt-20260930.htm?ref=bullished.co) preferred-stock purchase closed on October 5\. The FDA's decision on its lead drug is due November 14.

## From doubt to a 12-month runway

The [prior quarter's filing](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/0001599298/000159929826000068/smmt-20260630.htm?ref=bullished.co) said cash and short-term investments were not sufficient to fund operations for a year and carried the going-concern warning, the auditor-style note that a company may not be able to keep operating. The new filing says that with the AstraZeneca investment, the company "has evaluated and concluded" its cash and investments cover its operating needs for at least the next 12 months.

The cash gap was real before the deal closed. At September 30, Summit held $150.8 million in cash and equivalents and $479.0 million in short-term investments, against $419.4 million and $271.3 million at June 30\. Operating cash burn was $423.2 million for the first nine months of 2026, versus $221.0 million a year earlier.

The AstraZeneca money arrived after quarter-end, so it is not in those balances.

## The price of the cash: 109 million shares

AstraZeneca paid $18,356.14 for each of roughly 108,955 preferred shares. Each converts into 1,000 common shares, for 108,955,369 in total at $18.3561 a share.

Conversion needs the Hart-Scott-Rodino antitrust waiting period to expire and stockholder approval of a 1,000,000,000-share increase in authorized common stock. Holders approved that increase on November 4, according to an [8-K](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/0001599298/000159929826000088/smmt-20261104.htm?ref=bullished.co). The preferred stock and the underlying common shares carry a one-year lock-up after closing.

Summit's market value was $12.6 billion in Wednesday trading.

## A rescue funded by the market first

In July, Summit was funding trials by selling stock gradually through an at-the-market program. The $360.0 million of added capacity under its original agreement was fully used by September 30, and a new program of up to $380 million was signed July 23\. About $354.3 million remained under it at quarter-end.

The filing says Chairman and Co-CEO Robert Duggan, the other Co-CEO and the CFO and COO bought 3,960,000 shares through that program at a weighted average of $13.17.

Summit has no approved products. Its work centers on ivonescimab, licensed from Akeso, and the company may owe Akeso up to $4.56 billion in milestones: up to $1.05 billion regulatory and up to $3.51 billion commercial.

## The November 14 FDA test

Summit's application covers ivonescimab plus chemotherapy in EGFR-mutated lung cancer. The filing says the FDA noted that a statistically significant overall survival benefit is necessary to support approval, and the trial's primary overall survival analysis did not reach that bar. An updated analysis showed a hazard ratio of 0.76.

Initial data from the HARMONi-3 squamous lung cancer study are also expected, with the events needed for its primary analysis projected for the fourth quarter of 2026.

The FDA's goal date for the ivonescimab lung cancer application is November 14, and Summit plans a call after the agency acts.
