Growth was higher than management expected, he said, and shareholders should "expect to see us ramping the investment." ## A chain that caught management off guard Tenev, [Robinhood](https://www.bullished.co/tag/hood/)'s chairman and chief executive, said the chain generated over $50 million in chain fees in the quarter and ranks as a top-five chain by volume and revenue. He said the growth of the chain and its wallet "surprised and was higher than our expectations." DeFi perpetuals, a derivatives product traded on-chain, have recently run at over $1 billion a day on the network, Tenev said. He contrasted the traction with other chains launched in recent months, which he said saw far less. Because the chain caught the company by surprise, Tenev said, Robinhood has had to staff up a team to support builders, and he expects more developer support to be announced in the near future. ## Fees are not the priority An analyst from Citizens asked whether monetization can improve without making the chain less competitive. Tenev said he does not "want to be in the business of charging high fees for on-chain usage," preferring to win market share and developers. He said the chain leads on on-chain developer activity, as of the last time he checked. CFO Shiv Verma said the quarter's roughly $50 million of gross revenue was about $25 million net after a roughly 50% share with Arbitrum, or about $100 million annualized. Management has not yet called it a revenue cylinder, his term for a business line at $100 million or more of annualized revenue; Verma said it needs more time to bake. In a normalized environment, Verma said, monetization is probably a couple of basis points on notional values. He said the team is not focused on revenue now but on growing total value locked, developers and stock tokens, and that a couple of basis points "can add up to a really large number over time." ## The business behind the chain Robinhood, which runs trading apps for stocks, options, crypto, futures and event contracts, said the chain was a driver of transaction revenue in the quarter. Total revenue rose 12% from a year earlier to a record $1.4 billion, and adjusted EBITDA rose 9% to a record $808 million. Verma said adjusted EPS, a new measure the company introduced, was $0.60 in the quarter. Robinhood also lowered the top end of its full-year adjusted operating expense and stock compensation outlook by $25 million, to a range of $2.675 billion to $2.75 billion.
