# Polaris Tariff Refund Benefit Shrinks To $9.8 Million In Third Quarter, From $73.9 Million

[Polaris](https://www.bullished.co/tag/pii/), the powersports maker, booked just [$9.8 million](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/0000931015/000162828026067531/pii-20260930.htm?ref=bullished.co) of tariff-refund benefit in the third quarter, a fraction of the $73.9 million it recorded in cost of sales in the second quarter, according to its 10-Q. Management still raised its 2026 adjusted earnings guidance, though about $1.09 a share of it comes from those one-time refunds.

## A windfall that stopped repeating

For the first nine months of 2026, tariff refunds produced an $83.7 million benefit: $80.3 million in cost of sales and $3.4 million in interest expense. The third-quarter piece was $9.8 million, of which $6.4 million sat in cost of sales and $3.4 million in interest expense. The company said it has collected substantially all refunds for claims submitted to date.

The refunds trace to the Supreme Court's February ruling that the International Emergency Economic Powers Act does not authorize tariffs. Polaris filed refund claims during the year.

Gross profit was $432.4 million, down from $478.3 million in the [second quarter](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/0000931015/000162828026050104/pii-20260630.htm?ref=bullished.co), and gross margin fell to 21.2% from 23.6%. Against the third quarter of last year, gross profit rose 14% from $380.3 million and margin was up from 20.6%.

## Higher guidance, with a one-time slice

Third-quarter sales rose 11% to $2,042.6 million. Polaris swung to a profit of $38.4 million, or $0.66 a diluted share, from a $15.8 million loss a year earlier. Adjusted earnings were $1.08 a share, and the [earnings release](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/0000931015/000162828026067358/pii-q32026earningsrelease.htm?ref=bullished.co) said the refunds added $0.13 to that.

Polaris now expects 2026 adjusted earnings of [$3.50 to $3.60 a share](https://www.marketwatch.com/story/polaris-swings-to-3q-profit-boosts-2026-adj-eps-sales-growth-view-f34ee2b4?ref=bullished.co), up from $3.00 to $3.10, with adjusted sales of $7.55 billion to $7.60 billion. Roughly $1.09 of the new range comes from refunds recorded in the second and third quarters. CEO Mike Speetzen said the company is raising guidance "for the third time this year."

Polaris designs and sells off-road vehicles, snowmobiles, boats and the Slingshot roadster. The 10-Q says North America ORV dealer inventories were up about 12% and retail sales up low-single digits.

## A reshaped balance sheet

Polaris sold a majority of Indian Motorcycle on February 2, which cut Corporate sales to $19.1 million from $117.7 million a year earlier. Borrowings on its revolving credit line stood at $149.2 million at September 30, down from $459.8 million at midyear.

The covenant relief period ended in the third quarter. The credit agreement now requires interest coverage of at least 3.00 and leverage of no more than 3.50, and the company said it was in compliance at September 30.

The fourth-quarter report will show how margins hold at around 21% with refund income essentially used up.
