# PACCAR CEO Says Truck Buyers Still Want 200-Milligram Engines As 2027 Penalty Levels Stay Open

[PACCAR](https://www.bullished.co/tag/pcar/), the truck maker behind Kenworth, Peterbilt and DAF, says fleets want to keep buying proven 200-milligram engines in 2027 while the government has yet to finalize the non-compliance penalties, or NCPs, tied to new emissions rules, CEO Preston Feight said on the company's third-quarter earnings call Tuesday. The call followed [revenue of $7.94 billion](https://finance.yahoo.com/markets/stocks/articles/paccar-q3-earnings-snapshot-120639930.html?ref=bullished.co) and net income of $847.5 million for the quarter, which Feight put at 19% and 44% growth from a year earlier.

## Customers want proven engines

Asked how PACCAR can price 2027 trucks without knowing the penalty levels, Feight said the government is working through the 2027 emissions rules, but the levels are not final. "I think that does give some customers pause about what their price will be," he said.

After meeting fleets at the American Trucking Associations conference, Feight said everyone he met wants to keep buying the 200-milligram engines so they have time to prove out the newer, lower-NOx engines. Customers are starting to order, he said, with "good inquiry and increasing order intake," though that "likely increase as we have certainty around NCPs."

He said the first quarter is still filling and it is early days. The year, he added, is already full.

## Timing of the penalty decision

An analyst at Wolfe Research asked when certainty on the penalties would come. Feight said PACCAR should get a better view of first-quarter demand in the coming four to eight weeks. On the penalty timing itself, the transcribed answer reads "four-day weeks feels like a good number," followed by "we don't make those rules" and "the timing is unclear at this point."

An analyst at Citi asked whether early 2027 could be softer than late 2026\. Feight demurred: "You might be putting a little too many words in my mouth." He said the penalty levels will be significant to how the market reacts early in the year.

## Bullish on 2027 anyway

PACCAR projects a 2027 U.S. and Canadian Class 8 market of 240,000 to 280,000 trucks, against 240,000 to 260,000 this year. Feight said the company is calling the market up without knowing 2027 costs, and remains bullish. He expects uncertainty early in the year, with clarity through the second, third and fourth quarters.

Near term, third-quarter deliveries of 40,100 trucks were hit by supplier constraints, and the company guides to 41,000 to 43,000 in the fourth quarter. PACCAR Parts posted record quarterly revenue of $1.78 billion, and financial services earned $138 million pre-tax. PACCAR's market value was $54.9 billion in Tuesday trading.

Feight's own yardstick is the next four to eight weeks, when he expects a clearer read on how the first quarter fills.
