# Nutrien Third-Quarter Profit Falls 39% As Phosphate Slump Pushes It To Shut White Springs

Nutrien, a provider of crop inputs and services, said third-quarter [net earnings fell 39% to $288 million](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1725964/000119312526447554/d139721dex991.htm?ref=bullished.co), or $0.60 per diluted share, as phosphate and nitrogen earnings weakened. The company also said it will shut its White Springs phosphate facility in the second quarter of 2027 and keep Aurora, ending a strategic review of the business.

## Phosphate drags the quarter

Net earnings were $469 million a year earlier. Adjusted EBITDA, a non-GAAP measure, fell 8% to [$1.31 billion](https://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20261028001666/en/Nutrien-Reports-Third-Quarter-2026-Results?ref=bullished.co), and adjusted earnings per share were $0.61 against $0.97.

Phosphate adjusted EBITDA dropped to $8 million from $122 million, which the company attributed to higher sulfur input costs. Nitrogen adjusted EBITDA fell to $497 million from $556 million on lower sales volumes, with Trinidad shutdown costs also weighing on other expenses.

For the first nine months, [net earnings were $1.65 billion](https://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20261028001666/en/Nutrien-Reports-Third-Quarter-2026-Results?ref=bullished.co) and adjusted EBITDA $4.85 billion. Cash from operating activities rose 17% over that stretch, and the company returned $1.3 billion to shareholders through dividends and buybacks.

## Keep Aurora, close White Springs

Nutrien said it received non-binding bids for the phosphate business but concluded they did not adequately reflect the assets' long-term value. It will keep Aurora and its upgrade plants and close White Springs, whose mine is nearing the end of its economically recoverable reserve life.

White Springs is expected to account for about 20% of 2026 phosphate sales and 28% of segment cost of goods sold. Closing it should cut annual sustaining capital spending and lease payments by about [$50 million](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1725964/000119312526447554/d139721dex991.htm?ref=bullished.co).

The company expects fourth-quarter expenses, including non-cash impairments, on White Springs ($430 million of assets to be assessed) and on Trinidad ($760 million). It announced the indefinite Trinidad nitrogen shutdown on October 5, 2026.

## Guidance moves both ways

Nutrien raised 2026 potash volume guidance to 14.3 to 14.8 million tonnes and nitrogen to 9.3 to 9.7 million. Phosphate volumes were lowered to 2.40 to 2.55 million tonnes.

Retail adjusted EBITDA guidance was cut to $1.72 billion to $1.85 billion from $1.75 billion to $1.95 billion, reflecting lower third-quarter crop nutrient margins. Capital spending guidance fell to $1.95 billion to $2.00 billion.

"We have taken decisive actions on our portfolio optimization initiatives," said CEO Ken Seitz. Shares closed at $72.07 on Wednesday, for a market value of $33.1 billion.

Nutrien holds its earnings call Thursday at 10:00 a.m. Eastern, and its US$0.55 dividend is payable January 15, 2027 to holders of record December 31, 2026.
