# First Horizon Adds A 13th Board Seat For Vanderbilt Medical Center CEO Jeffrey Balser

[First Horizon](https://www.bullished.co/tag/fhn/), the Memphis bank holding company, [elected Jeffrey Balser](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/0000036966/000003696626000184/fhn-20261026.htm?ref=bullished.co) — CEO of Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville — to its board on Monday and widened the board to thirteen seats from twelve, according to an [8-K](https://www.bullished.co/learn/8-k-items-explained/) filed Tuesday. Balser's seat is an addition, not a replacement.

## A new seat, filled at once

The boards of First Horizon and its subsidiary First Horizon Bank elected Balser, 64, effective immediately on October 26\. The same day, directors unanimously [amended Section 3.2](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/0000036966/000003696626000184/fhn-20261026.htm?ref=bullished.co) of the company's bylaws to raise the board's size to thirteen members from twelve.

Balser will sit on the Nominating and Corporate Governance Committee and the Information Technology Committee. He is eligible to take part in the company's compensation plans for non-employee directors.

## A physician-executive from Nashville

Balser is President, CEO and a board member of Vanderbilt University Medical Center, an academic health system in Nashville, and Dean of Vanderbilt University School of Medicine. Before 2008 he was chair of anesthesiology and later chief research officer at the medical center.

He also practiced cardiac anesthesiology and cardiac intensive care medicine there and, before 1998, at Johns Hopkins, where he led a research program funded by the National Institutes of Health. The filing says there are no arrangements or understandings between Balser and any other person about his selection.

## The bank he is joining

First Horizon provides commercial, private banking, consumer, small business, wealth management, brokerage, capital markets and mortgage services, mainly through First Horizon Bank. At December 31, 2025, it had $84 billion in assets, 412 banking centers in southern states and 7,404 associates.

The filing notes that the company and its bank have lent to and done other business with directors and their families in the ordinary course, on terms matching those offered to unrelated customers, and expect to continue.

Balser's election and the bylaw change both took effect on October 26, a day before the filing.
