[Fate Therapeutics](https://www.bullished.co/tag/fate/), which develops off-the-shelf cell therapies for cancer and autoimmune diseases, expects its funds and a newly awarded research grant to [last through mid-2028](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/0001434316/000119312526448530/fate-ex99%5F1.htm?ref=bullished.co). The company announced the funding outlook and a smaller third-quarter loss Thursday in results accompanying an [SEC filing](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/0001434316/000119312526448530/fate-20261105.htm?ref=bullished.co).

## Lower Spending, Smaller Loss

Fate lost $30.7 million, or $0.25 per share, in the third quarter, compared with $32.3 million, or $0.27 per share, a year earlier. Operating expenses totaled $32.2 million: research and development accounted for $24.2 million and administration for $8.0 million.

For the first nine months, operating expenses fell $18.5 million from the same period in 2025\. Research spending declined $9.1 million, or 11%, while administrative spending fell $9.4 million, or 26%. Quarterly collaboration revenue was zero, versus $1.741 million a year earlier.

Cash, cash equivalents and investments stood at $139.1 million on September 30, down $14.7 million over the quarter. That balance excludes the [new $15.0 million](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/0001434316/000119312526448530/fate-ex99%5F1.htm?ref=bullished.co) California Institute for Regenerative Medicine grant awarded to support the lupus nephritis study.

FATE shares rose about 3% to $1.90 in Friday trading.

## Kidney Responses In Two Patients

The grant backs a mid-stage trial of FT819 for lupus nephritis, the kidney disease associated with lupus. Enrollment is open at 17 sites, with approximately 53 patients expected. The study began in August, when its first participant received treatment without a hospital admission.

Developed through discussions with the FDA under Fate's Regenerative Medicine Advanced Therapy designation, the study has no comparison group. Patients receive 900 million cells after preparatory bendamustine chemotherapy; its main goal is a complete kidney response at 26 weeks.

The supporting evidence remains preliminary. In early-stage results presented in October at American Society of Nephrology Kidney Week, both bendamustine-treated patients with six-month follow-up achieved either a complete kidney response or the study's primary efficacy kidney response. Their average urine protein-to-creatinine ratio—a measure of protein in urine—fell approximately 50% from baseline. The single patient followed to 24 months maintained a complete response.

Patients stopped immunosuppressant medicines before treatment, although low-dose prednisone and hydroxychloroquine were permitted. Fate also reported improvements in lupus disease activity and patient-reported fatigue.

The broader safety review covered 29 autoimmune patients through August 18, 2026\. Two had severe urinary tract infections and six had severe reductions in blood-cell counts. Five patients experienced mild or moderate cytokine release syndrome, an inflammatory reaction; none had a more severe case. No deaths or dose-limiting toxicities were reported.

## A Trial Without Preparatory Chemotherapy

Fate's therapies use engineered induced pluripotent stem cells as a renewable starting material for disease-fighting immune cells. Its candidates remain in human testing, with FT819 also being studied in systemic sclerosis and lupus outside the kidneys.

The next candidate, FT839, targets both CD19 and CD38 on immune cells. Its early- and mid-stage autoimmune trial permits background treatment without requiring preparatory chemotherapy. The FDA cleared the application to begin testing in July, multiple sites are active, and Fate has completed manufacturing for the study.

Fate expects to begin dosing patients by year-end, including patients with rheumatoid arthritis. Its cancer program FT836 also continues enrolling patients with solid tumors, including metastatic colorectal cancer and non-small cell lung cancer; a separate investigator-led study pairs it with daratumumab for multiple myeloma.

Fate has four presentations scheduled for ACR Convergence, held November 6–11 in Orlando, including updated FT819 clinical findings and the FT839 trial's design and progress.
