[Devon Energy](https://www.bullished.co/tag/dvn/), which produces oil, natural gas and natural gas liquids in the U.S., closed its open-ended portfolio review after sale uncertainty weighed on 3,000 families during merger integration, President and Chief Executive Officer Clay Gaspar said on the company’s Friday earnings call. The review is finished, he said, but management will keep evaluating deals.

## The Cost Of Everything For Sale

Employees were being asked to integrate businesses, choose software and improve processes while wondering whether their own assets would be sold. Gaspar called that uncertainty “a massive distraction and overhang.”

The review followed Devon’s combination with Cotera, bringing together teams with different perspectives on the assets. Management tested internal assumptions against outside assessments and shareholder feedback, and pursued several possible transactions, Gaspar said.

An open process also invited approaches that management considered damaging to shareholder value. Devon’s financial position allowed it to reject them: “we were never desperate sellers,” Gaspar said.

A Wolfe Research analyst asked whether completing the review meant Devon was finished reshaping its portfolio. Gaspar said management wanted to end the period in which the company’s entire identity remained unsettled, without closing the door to future opportunities.

## Investors Want A Defined Devon

A Goldman Sachs analyst challenged management on the stock’s underperformance over the six months since the combination. Gaspar answered directly: “we are not satisfied with how our shares have performed.”

Gaspar said he had personally met nearly 200 investors over the last six months, while Devon’s team had met more than 300\. Those conversations produced no uniform prescription, but investors repeatedly wanted to know whether the combined business would emphasize oil or gas, concentrate on particular basins or sell assets. Some were waiting on the sidelines for clarity, he said.

Devon’s answer puts the Permian Basin at the center, with the Anadarko, Marcellus and Rockies serving complementary roles. The company’s strategy combines improvements to existing operations, organic investment opportunities and continued portfolio management.

The business case for retaining those complementary assets includes shared operating practices and infrastructure opportunities. Gaspar said the Anadarko could benefit from combining Cotera’s well performance with Devon’s drilling and completion costs; longer wells are also improving the Rockies operations.

## Eagle Ford Cash Favors Buybacks

The pending [Eagle Ford sale](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1090012/000119312526449884/d120646dex991.htm?ref=bullished.co) is the review’s concrete exit. Gaspar said the market assigned the asset more value than Devon did internally, while its steep production decline increased the spending needed to maintain companywide output.

Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer Shane Young said Devon expects $3.5 billion in net sale proceeds early in 2027 and intends to favor buybacks with that money. Devon repurchased $414 million of shares in the third quarter and expects fourth-quarter repurchases to exceed $1 billion.

Young’s preliminary 2027 outlook assumes the sale closes early in the year. It calls for approximately $5.3 billion in capital spending, compared with a $5.9 billion pro forma 2026 baseline, with roughly 75% directed to the Permian. The spending figure excludes land purchases and Devon’s expected $400 million Solitude pipeline investment next year.

Management expects modest production growth and improved capital efficiency to support shareholder returns. Its longer-term plan targets annual free cash flow per-share growth of 5% to 10%, with 45% to 60% of cash flow reinvested.

Young said investors should expect more detail early next year on the board’s decisions about the pace and timing of 2027 buybacks.
