[Bread Financial](https://www.bullished.co/tag/bfh/), which issues co-brand and private label credit cards with retail partners, [earned $156 million](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/0001101215/000110121526000092/bfh-20260930.htm?ref=bullished.co) in the third quarter, down from $188 million a year earlier, even as income before taxes climbed to $209 million from $196 million. The 10-Q filed Tuesday attributes the gap to a discrete tax benefit in the prior-year quarter, which cut the effective tax rate to 4.3% then, against 25.5% now.

## A tax credit distorts the comparison

The provision for income taxes rose to $53 million from $8 million. The company's [earnings release](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/0001101215/000110121526000087/exh9913q26bfhepr%5Ffinal.htm?ref=bullished.co) put the prior-year item at $38 million.

Revenue, meaning net interest and non-interest income, rose 5% to $1.017 billion. Pretax pre-provision earnings, an adjusted measure that strips out credit-loss provisioning, rose 7% to $530 million.

Diluted earnings per share were [$3.82 against $3.96](https://wtop.com/national/2026/10/bread-financial-q3-earnings-snapshot/?ref=bullished.co), a 4% drop. Diluted shares fell to 39.3 million from 47.5 million, which cushioned the per-share figure. For the first nine months, diluted EPS rose 20% to $11.54.

## Buybacks shrink the share count

The company bought back 0.7 million shares for $75 million in the quarter, leaving $374 million of authorization. It repurchased 5.5 million shares for $466 million in the first nine months of 2026, a pace that included [$241 million in the second quarter](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/0001101215/000110121526000074/bfh-20260630.htm?ref=bullished.co).

The board declared a common dividend of $0.25 a share, up from $0.23, payable December 15 to holders of record November 30\. Its common equity tier 1 capital ratio slipped to 13.1% from 14.0% a year earlier, which the filing says reflects buybacks, dividends, loan growth and debt repurchases outpacing earnings.

## Credit improves, loans grow

The company issues cards through its banks and lends and services the loans; as of December 31, 2025 it had $18.8 billion in loans across about 34 million open accounts. Credit sales rose 9% to [$7.4 billion](https://www.americanbanker.com/payments/news/bread-inflation-making-spending-increasingly-selective?ref=bullished.co), and end-of-period loans rose 7% to $18.9 billion.

The net principal loss rate fell to 6.40% from 7.39%, and the delinquency rate to 5.57% from 6.04%. Management now expects a full-year loss rate below 7%, an effective tax rate of 25% to 27% for the year, and revenue up about 5%. Consumer deposits rose 21% to $9.9 billion, or 53% of average funding.

Comenity Bank merged into Comenity Capital Bank on October 1\. Moody's upgraded the parent's senior unsecured debt to Ba1 from Ba2 in October.

The company's guided 25% to 27% tax rate makes the fourth quarter a cleaner comparison than this one.
